How Often Should You Change Your Oil in South Florida Heat?

Open your owner's manual and you'll usually find two maintenance schedules: "normal" and "severe service." Here's the part most drivers miss — daily driving in South Florida looks a lot more like the severe schedule. Constant heat, humidity, short trips, and stop-and-go traffic on the 441 or the Sawgrass all make your oil work harder and break down faster.

So what's the right interval?

It depends on your car and your oil:

  • Full synthetic: typically 5,000–7,500 miles in our climate, even if the bottle says 10,000.
  • Synthetic blend: around 5,000 miles.
  • Conventional: 3,000–4,000 miles — though most newer cars are happier on synthetic.

If most of your trips are under 15 minutes — school runs, grocery trips, short commutes — lean toward the shorter end. Short trips never let the engine fully burn off moisture in the oil, and Florida humidity makes that worse.

Why it's the cheapest insurance you can buy

Oil is what stands between your engine's moving parts and a four-figure repair. Worn-out oil loses viscosity in heat, varnishes internal parts, and lets sludge build up in the places you least want it. We've seen engines come into the shop that died years early for the cost of three skipped oil changes.

Quick tip: Check your oil level once a month — many modern engines burn a little oil between changes, and low oil in summer heat is a fast way to shorten an engine's life.

An oil change at AutoPlus also gets you a quick once-over — belts, hoses, battery, tires, and brakes — so small problems get caught while they're still small. See our oil change & scheduled maintenance service for what's included.
