Signs You Need Brake Repair

Brakes rarely fail without warning. They squeal, grind, shake, and pull — a progression of hints that gets more expensive the longer you wait. Here's how to read the signs.

Squealing or chirping

Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to sing when the pad material gets low. A consistent squeal at low speed is your brakes politely telling you it's time. Caught at this stage, you're usually looking at pads and maybe rotors.

Grinding

Grinding means the polite phase is over — you're likely metal-on-metal, with the pad backing plate cutting into the rotor. Every mile adds cost at this point, and stopping distances get longer. Don't sit on this one.

Vibration or pulsing in the pedal

A pulse you feel in the pedal (or a shake in the wheel when braking from highway speed) usually points to uneven rotor wear or thickness variation. It tends to get worse in traffic, where Florida drivers spend plenty of time.

Soft pedal, long stops, or pulling

A pedal that sinks lower than usual, a car that takes longer to stop, or a pull to one side under braking can involve hydraulics — calipers, hoses, or fluid. These deserve immediate attention.

Quick tip: Rain after a long dry stretch makes South Florida roads slick — exactly when tired brakes show their weakness. Don't wait for wet season to find out yours are marginal.

We inspect brakes for free with most services, show you the actual pad measurements, and explain your options plainly. Read more about our brake repair service.
